Today, I’m just giving quick short notes that we all need to keep in mind. They’re about time, money and respect.
Jim Rohn once said that you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. And one of the fastest way to change your situation is to change who you surround yourself with. Put the right people around you and success is inevitable.
Do an audit of yourself and your friends. Are you moving forward or backwards with these friends around you? Check it and move appropriately, with or without them.
There are two inevitable consequences of having money that you must be mindful of. The first is a feeling of power over others. The second is a feeling that you are better than others. Once those two feelings arise, you are veering into the realm of pride. Think of money as a gift. It's not just the result of hard work, for there are those who worked harder than you who didn't succeed. Also think of it as a responsibility - it enables you to help others. Embrace the feeling of being the recipient of good gifts and of having a responsibility to others. It will save you. - @subomiplumptre
Salient advice to remind ourselves that we can control money, and we shouldn’t let it control us.
Rainmaking requires access to key influencers and decision makers, but most of these people are bombarded every day by sales people. So these key influencers employ people to shield them from rainmakers. They’re called “umbrellas” or otherwise known as secretaries, administrative aides and receptionists. Learn how to suck down to these people.
Understand them: Their job is to enable the executive do his job and one aspect of this is guarding his/her time
Don’t try to buy them: No one likes to be bought so don’t send gifts to bribe your way in. The way to get in is to have a credible introduction, rock-solid proposition and then treat every contact with respect and civility. After you’ve got this access, you can send the gift. Whatever you do, gratitude is always better than bribery.
Empathize with them: They’re probably not being paid that much, so don’t think they “should” take your abuse
Never complain about them: Don’t go over their heads and complain. The first thing that will happen is that the complaint will circle back to him/ her and you can kiss your access good bye.
This is an extract from The Art of the Start by Guy Kawasaki. Remember to show respect to everyone you come across. Plus a little conference hack I learned some years back: when you attend a conference to see someone speak, let’s use Oprah for this example, look out for her aides or assistants (usually helping her set up/ carrying her items or business cards etc.) and note these individuals. Once Oprah is done, stand back and watch everyone and their mom want to speak to or get a picture with Oprah. Wrong move. My advice is to connect with this aide/ assistant, get their information and befriend them. If you want quick unobstructed access to Aunty O, they are the gate keepers and give you the best shot at getting that meeting or phone call with her. You’re welcome.
